We are the Southampton University String Orchestra. We have around 20 active members, rehearse weekly (during term time) and put on three concerts a year.

Who We Are

SUStrings was founded in 2006 by Zoe Bolton and Mel Morgan to provide an opportunity for string players at the University of Southampton to explore the extensive and varied repertoire for string orchestra.
The orchestra performs music for string orchestra from a broad scope of musical eras and gives one concert at the end of each term. The orchestra has been conducted by George Holloway, Tilly Burgess, Dominic Harries, Joseph Beckhelling and is currently led by Rosie McNiff.
There are no auditions for joining the orchestra, although there is an informal requirement of grade 5 equivalent to join.

Rehearsals

Take place once a week on highfield campus. They normally start at 7:30 (although that time gets earlier before concerts) and last around 2 hours with a 15 minutes break. For details of upcoming rehearsals see our calendar below. After rehearsals many members go to Stag's Head where there is often pizza.

What's On

2016/17 is seeing SUStrings busier than ever, performing at five events; two before Christmas (including busking!), two in the New Year, and a final Summer Concert.
